Sumter County Schools Athletic Department has a new tradition this year. Before every home football game, they will publicly recognize a "Home Town Hero," a person from the community who has exhibited a strong commitment to the children of Sumter County.
On August 24, 2018, Coach Oscar Ellis was chosen as the first Home Town Hero. Coach Ellis is a graduate of Americus High School and played on the 1974 and 1975 State Football Championship teams.  After high school, he attended Fort Valley State University where he received a degree in Physical Education. Coach Ellis then returned home to Sumter County to teach school, ultimately becoming head football coach at Sumter County Comprehensive High School in 1987. During his time as head coach, Ellis took the Rams to their first ever winning season and their first ever playoff appearance.
As Home Town Hero, Coach Ellis stood in as honorary captain during the coin toss before the game. The stadium crowd expressed their gratitude through cheers as Ellis came onto the field. Following the coin toss, Ellis posed for a photo with current Americus-Sumter High players.
