Americus-Sumter High student Prerana Kumar has been selected to attend the Governor’s Honors Program in Rome, Georgia, this summer.
Governor’s Honors is a four-week long summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students in the state of Georgia. Students who participate in GHP attend classes in a wide variety of fields, including communicative arts, engineering, mathematics, social studies, foreign language, science and agriculture, and both visual and performing arts, such as painting, ceramics, music, dance, theater. The intention of GHP is to create opportunities for students to experience high-level academic challenges while building meaningful relationships with other students from around the state. The program is to be held on the campus of Berry College. GHP has been a long-standing tradition for Georgia’s superlative high school students since 1963.
Ms. Kumar said the selection process is very prestigious, and mimics the admission process used by universities. “Governor’s honors is sort of a rehearsal for applying to college.”
Kumar’s focus for the four weeks will be in the sciences. “No concentration, just everything from chemistry to ecology, plus the physical sciences,” she said.
She will be working with like-minded people who are also away from home for the first time. “One Huge bonus is to receive the chance to live on my own for a month,” said Kumar.
