Americus-Sumter High School 12th grader Eric Brown, Jr. recently received the “Atlanta Falcons Power Player” award. The award is given annually by the NFL franchise to high school players who exhibit sustained excellence in athletic performance and community involvement.

Brown received one of only eight awards in the whole state of Georgia and was the only player outside of the Atlanta area to receive the award. He said he considers it a huge privilege.

Before receiving the award candidates must first be nominated then endure a lengthy application process which evaluates potential recipients by various criteria such as grades, community involvement, attitude, character, comportment, and performance on the field.

“I’m very thankful they chose me,” Brown said in an interview. “I’m pleased to have the opportunity to serve my school and my community in a positive way.”

Brown plays running back and cornerback for ASHS. He has been heavily recruited by college teams around the south but has not yet made a decision about where he will attend next year. Recently, a video featuring him was played on the Jumbotron at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during a televised Falcons game and has brought an increase in attention in his athletic skills.

Brown’s father, Eric Brown, Sr., said, “Eric is a very humble person; a model kid, really. He’s always been a hard worker. I’m so proud of him.” He added, “He’s receiving offers from universities all around Georgia and out of state, both public and private.”
