The Americus-Sumter High science department recently sponsored a field trip to Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin. More than fifty students visited the park to witness first hand the effects of humans' impact on the environment. Providence Canyon formed due to poor farming practices in the early nineteenth century. Upon arriving, the students met with rangers who went over basic safety rules of the park. Students then hiked the canyon and viewed various formations and a stream emanating from under the ground.
The trip was a huge success, according to Andrew Herring, an environmental science teacher at ASHS. "Many of the students were awestruck that such a place exists only an hour away from Americus," Herring said. "Several students told us that they greatly enjoyed the trip, and one student said he was inspired to go out and hike other places like Providence Canyon."
