Americus-Sumter High senior Prerana Kumar has received a "Letter of Commendation" from the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Principal Kimothy Hadley presented Kumar with the letter on Friday. Kumar's letter represents the closing stages of the 2018 scholarship process conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a process which began years earlier. Students' standings are based on scores from the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).
Kumar is one of 34,000 commended students throughout the nation being recognized for exceptional academic promise. These commended students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the competition.
In a statement released by the NMSC, the commended students were lauded for "demonstrating outstanding potential for academic success. These students represent a valuable national resource, and recognizing their accomplishment is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them to continue to pursue academic success."
Kumar expressed gratitude for having been commended by the NMSC. "I'm really honored and extremely grateful to be recognized in this way. I'm thankful for everyone who has helped me in my life this far, which led to me receiving this award."
