It's often said that "clothes make the man." This is certainly true for a group of young men at Americus-Sumter High who have chosen to dress up every Tuesday for the rest of the year. "Tie up Tuesday" is an unofficial, voluntary program led by a handful of male teachers at the school hoping to influence their students in a positive manner.
Kentrell Mercer is one of the adult leaders of the group. "Every Tuesday, these students wear shirt and tie, slacks, and dress shoes for the full day. We began with ten students participating, but the numbers are growing fast. We hope parents will encourage their kids to participate." Mercer said the program was initiated specifically to improve male students' self image. "Wearing dress clothes makes them feel better about themselves. When I was in school, we dressed up every Wednesday. This meant we couldn't misbehave because if we did, we'd look foolish. I noticed how wearing dress clothes can change a person's attitude. We hope these young men will carry this knowledge into adulthood."
"Tied Up Tuesday" encourages young men to become and remain "A" students. Mercer and the other mentors organize community service projects and take field trips, among other activities. Visiting speakers are scheduled throughout the year, including regional celebrities, athletes, and other role models.
Kimothy Hadley, principal of Americus-Sumter High, praised the young men for making the choice to stand out. "Our young men are future workers, future fathers, future husbands and future leaders, all of which are positions related to authority, respect and prestige. We want our young men to see themselves as successful, and not be taken lightly."
ASHS senior Mikal Douglas feels Tie Up Tuesday is a great opportunity for everybody participating. "It gives you a chance to represent yourself and show that you want to make a change in the community. With me being a senior, I feel like I have an extra responsibility to my younger classmates who look up to me. I feel like I need to set an example for the younger students."
